Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah chaired a review meeting on law and order issues in Goa with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant in Panaji. The meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary, Director of Intelligence Bureau, senior officers of MHA, Goa Indian Coast Guard, and other concerned organizations.
Key discussions focused on the implementation of three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas, which along with effective implementation of ICJS (Interoperable Criminal Justice System), has resulted in Goa's conviction rate increasing significantly from 22% to 53%. The courts are now able to decide criminal matters within 6 to 8 months in many instances.
The meeting covered multiple security aspects including NDPS matters, coastal security, fugitives' matters, disaster management, police modernization, administration of enemy properties, and deportation of illegal migrants particularly those involved in crimes and narcotics offenses. Shah appreciated Goa Government and State Police efforts in maintaining law and order and coastal security, specifically noting contributions toward making Goa 'NashaMukt' (drug-free) and successfully dealing with cybercrimes.
Shah emphasized the need for comprehensive security assessment of emerging challenges, constant monitoring of important trends and patterns, cross linkages of various crimes, inter-state movement of criminals, and coastal security. He stated that all steps taken by MHA and state government should ensure Goa becomes the top state in terms of law & order in the country.
Goa government officers reported a declining trend in violent crimes but identified cybercrimes, narcotics-related crimes, and foreigner-related violations as areas requiring strict action. The DGP of Goa detailed comprehensive initiatives being undertaken on coastal security, cybercrimes, and narcotics matters.
The Modi Government committed to supporting smaller states in administrative matters, capacity building, and development issues to achieve the Viksit Bharat 2047 goal. Shah stated that Goa has full potential to become a model state in the country, achieving all security and development targets.
