Regulatory and Policy Measures

The Reserve Bank of India, by an order dated August 31, 2026, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹26,82,800 (Rupees Twenty‑six lakh eighty‑two thousand eight hundred only) on TransUnion CIBIL Limited for non‑compliance with certain provisions of the RBI directions titled ‘Framework for compensation to customers for delayed updation/rectification of credit information’. The penalty is imposed under the powers conferred by section 25(1)(iii) read with section 23(4) of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005.

A statutory inspection of the company was conducted with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2025. Following supervisory findings of non‑compliance and related correspondence, RBI issued a show‑cause notice to the company, asking it to explain why the penalty should not be imposed. After reviewing the company’s written reply, additional submissions, and oral arguments presented during a personal hearing, RBI concluded that the charge against the company was sustained.

The specific breach identified was the company’s failure to credit the compensation amount to the bank accounts of certain eligible complainants within the prescribed period. RBI clarified that this action is based solely on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and does not intend to comment on the validity of any transaction or agreement between the company and its customers. The imposition of the monetary penalty is also without prejudice to any other action that RBI may initiate against the company.

The press release is signed by the Chief General Manager, Brij Raj.

This regulatory action underscores RBI’s enforcement of compliance with credit‑information compensation norms.
