The Reserve Bank of India, under the Department of Communication, issued a notice on 7 September 2026 regarding the premature redemption of the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2020‑21 Series VI. According to Government of India notification F.No. 4(4)‑B(W&M)/2020 dated 13 April 2020, premature redemption is permissible after the fifth year from the issue date, on the date interest is payable. Consequently, the next permissible premature redemption date for this tranche is 8 September 2026, five years after its issue on 8 September 2020.

The redemption price has been fixed at ₹15,384 per unit. This price is derived from the simple average of the closing price of 999‑purity gold for the three business days preceding the redemption date – specifically 3 September, 4 September, and 7 September 2026 – as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).

The notice is signed by Deputy General Manager Ajit Prasad of the Communications division.

In summary, the RBI has confirmed the eligibility date for premature redemption of the SGB 2020‑21 Series VI and established the redemption price based on recent gold market averages, providing clarity to bondholders ahead of the 8 September 2026 redemption window.
