UIDAI Launches Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox at Global Fintech Fest 2026
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) launched two significant technological tools on September 9, 2026, at the Global Fintech Fest: the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK (Software Development Kit) and the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox. These developments are specifically designed to enable ecosystem partners, particularly in the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) sector, to integrate, test, and deploy Aadhaar Face Authentication more seamlessly within their digital applications to meet RBI-mandated multi-factor authentication requirements.
The Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK brings UIDAI's Face Authentication capability directly into native Android and iOS applications, eliminating the need for users to switch between different apps. This creates a smoother, single-app authentication experience. The ready-to-use SDK simplifies integration for partners while incorporating AI/ML-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing capabilities. It supports secure handling and encryption of authentication data and is designed to work across consumer smartphones, expected to help government departments, banks, fintechs, and other organizations deploy Face Authentication-enabled services more efficiently.
Alongside the SDK, UIDAI launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox, which provides a secure and controlled environment for organizations to integrate, test, and validate the complete Face Authentication journey before production onboarding. The Sandbox enables developers and quality assurance teams to test key stages including user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness checks, authentication, error handling, and response validation without requiring external biometric hardware. It also allows testing of failure scenarios such as invalid digital signatures, network interruptions, timeouts, and spoofing attempts.
This launch addresses a long-standing demand from the fintech and banking ecosystem to build a seamless and secure user onboarding journey from within their own mobile applications. It significantly simplifies the user journey by eliminating the previous requirement for a background application called FaceRD app, making the process longer and dependent on its presence. Now users need download only one application (e.g., banking, insurance, or broking app) and can complete Aadhaar authentication from within that single app.
UIDAI's indigenously engineered AI/ML-driven Face Authentication solution, originally launched in 2021, has already processed over 500 crore (5 billion) transactions and been adopted by nearly 200 entities. These include Union Government ministries and departments, State Governments, Banks, NBFCs, telecom operators, brokerage firms, and certifying authorities. The technology received the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2023 under the Innovation category, recognizing its significant impact.
The face authentication technology is widely used across multiple services including submission of Digital Life Certificate (Jeevan Pramaan) by pensioners, Ayushman Bharat beneficiary onboarding, DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) schemes, Aadhaar-enabled payments, SIM activation through e-KYC, and beneficiary authentication for schemes like PM e-Drive, PM Awas Yojana, and PM Kisan.
Additionally, UIDAI unveiled a "Playbook on ease of Onboarding" which will serve as a guide for BFSI entities to get onboarded in the UIDAI authentication ecosystem for ID verification of customers, staff, and other business partners, further facilitating adoption of these authentication technologies.
