Air China Loss Sparks 5% Airline Decline
Chinese airline stocks slipped on Monday after Air China disclosed a first‑half net loss of 2.3 billion yuan (approximately $340 million), widening from a 1.8 billion‑yuan loss a year earlier. The loss contributed to a 5 % drop in Air China’s Hong Kong‑listed shares by 04:19 GMT. China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd also fell 5 % after reporting a 2.2 billion‑yuan loss versus 1.4 billion yuan in the same period last year. China Southern Airlines lost 5.5 % in Hong Kong trading, while Cathay Pacific Airways slipped 2.2 %.
The sector is under pressure from rising fuel costs; Chinese carriers have limited fuel‑hedging programmes and face intense domestic competition that curtails their ability to pass higher costs onto passengers. Brent crude rose above $90 per barrel on Monday following U.S. forces striking two Iranian launchers on Larak Island and subsequent Iranian retaliation against U.S. forces in Jordan, further inflating fuel expenses for airlines.
Overall, the combination of weaker earnings and a surge in oil prices weighed on investor sentiment across the Chinese airline industry.
