The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a total allocation of ₹20,750 crore from financial year 2020-21 onward for fisheries development across all States and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh. The scheme provides social security through group accidental insurance coverage for both marine and inland fishers and allied fish workers, with premium sharing between Centre and States at 60:40 ratio, 90:10 for Himalayan and North Eastern States, and full Centre funding for Union Territories.
The insurance coverage under PMMSY includes ₹5,00,000 for death or permanent total disability, ₹2,50,000 for permanent partial disability, and hospitalization expenses of ₹25,000 in case of accident. Andhra Pradesh had not participated in the Group Accidental Insurance Scheme (GAIS) during the previous five years but has now joined for the first time during the current financial year 2026-27 (from 01 June 2026 to 31 May 2027), covering 2,84,888 fishers. No claims have been made for settlement till date.
The claim filing and settlement process is governed by policy terms and conditions, with standardized claim formats and checklists prescribed to simplify the process. Claim intimation must be submitted within 120 days from the date of accident, and complete claim proposals with all requisite documents must be submitted within 180 days. Regular coordination meetings are conducted with State Fisheries Departments, insurance intermediaries, and insurance companies to address deficiencies, expedite submission of claim documents, and ensure timely settlement of eligible claims through regular review meetings and follow-ups.
