APEDA Facilitates First-Ever Air Shipment of Karnataka Mangoes to Maldives
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, has achieved a significant milestone by facilitating the first-ever air shipment of Neelam and Totapuri mango varieties from Karnataka to the Maldives. The shipment was flagged off on 30 July 2026, marking a new chapter in promoting Karnataka's late-season mango varieties in international markets.
The export consignment comprised one metric tonne of Neelam and Totapuri mangoes sourced directly from farmers associated with M/s Prakruthimaya Farmers Producer Company Ltd. based in KGF Taluk, Kolar district, Karnataka. The shipment was exported by M/s Ahalya Devi Ventures, with Mrs. Ashwini A serving as Director, highlighting the growing participation of women entrepreneurs in India's agri-export ecosystem.
Economic Impact and Farmer Benefits
Farmers associated with the Farmer Producer Company realized over 50% higher returns through this direct export initiative compared to conventional market channels. This achievement underscores the value of direct procurement, export market linkages, and organized aggregation in enhancing farmers' incomes while encouraging wider adoption of export-oriented cultivation practices.
Product Characteristics and Market Opportunity
Neelam mango is appreciated for its sweet, juicy pulp, rich aroma, and suitability for desserts, smoothies, and beverages. Totapuri mango is known for its distinctive shape, sweet-tangy flavor, and versatility for both fresh consumption and processing. These varieties are harvested from late June to the end of July, offering an opportunity to extend India's mango export season and cater to international demand beyond the peak harvest period.
