The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry facilitated the maiden export consignment of 1.755 metric tons of NPOP- and EU-certified organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder (Palmyra Blossom Nectar) from Gobichettipalayam in Erode district of Tamil Nadu to Varna, Bulgaria on 15 October 2026. This marks India's first export of traditional Palmyra-based products to Bulgaria and represents a significant step in diversifying the country's organic export basket.
The consignment was manufactured and exported by Wellbeing Foods, Erode in collaboration with Chetty Exports Private Limited, Chennai, and will be shipped by sea through Chennai Port. The overseas importer and distributor is Sow Life Ltd, Bulgaria. The initiative covers 137 acres under organic cultivation and is expected to benefit farmers through improved market access and export-oriented value chains, with reported price realization approximately 15-22% higher for farmers and 17% higher for the manufacturer compared to domestic market prices.
Palmyra Jaggery Powder is derived from Palmyra blossom nectar and serves as a traditional Indian sweetener with potential nutritional benefits including vitamins and minerals, positioning it as an alternative to refined sugar. The product is associated with traditional production practices using the Palmyra palm, which has long been part of Tamil Nadu's agricultural and cultural landscape.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev flagged off the consignment in a ceremony attended by APEDA Secretary Dr. Saswati Bose, senior APEDA officials, exporting company representatives, international partners, progressive rice farmers, and other stakeholders. APEDA continues to facilitate exports of certified organic and value-added agricultural products by supporting market development, quality compliance, and linkages between Indian producers and overseas buyers. This inaugural export is expected to open avenues for further market expansion and strengthen the presence of India's traditional products in international markets.
