Detailed Information
Apollo Hospitals Chennai performed the world’s first Video Endoscopic Inguinal Lymphadenectomy (VEIL) using the Hugo Robotic‑Assisted Surgery (RAS) system via a lateral approach (access through the side of the thigh).
The patient was a 40‑year‑old man diagnosed with penile cancer; he made an excellent recovery with no major post‑operative complications.
Inguinal lymph node removal is traditionally done through an open approach with large incisions, often causing skin damage, lymphatic channel injury, wound‑healing complications, and lymph fluid leakage.
The robotic VEIL technique uses very small incisions, precise instruments, and enhanced visual control, reducing tissue disturbance and post‑operative lymph leakage.
Apollo Hospitals has previously used the Hugo RAS system for robotic uro‑oncology surgeries on the prostate, kidney, and bladder; the addition of VEIL completes the full spectrum of robotic uro‑oncology procedures.
