Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune, is implementing scientific organic waste management and sustainable gardening practices as part of the Swachhata Special Campaign 6.0. The institute produces approximately 6,000 kg of compost annually from fallen leaves and garden waste through an in-house composting process that involves collecting, crushing, and decomposing organic material in designated compost pits for 3-4 months with weekly mixing for aeration. The mature compost is utilized in an 80% compost and 20% soil mixture for gardening, improving soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient availability while reducing external gardening inputs and waste disposal requirements.
ARI maintains approximately two acres of gardens and green areas containing 308 trees representing over 100 species, 39 medicinal plant species, 2,300 ornamental plants, and 800 seasonal flowering plants, along with various vegetables. The institute's Orchidarium supports orchid conservation and educational activities, contributing to biodiversity conservation and environmental quality on campus.
Complementing these efforts, ARI promotes nutrition-sensitive horticulture through its 6×6 Nutrition Garden Model, which demonstrates cultivation of 23 types of vegetables in a compact 6×6 meter area. Designed to meet the nutritional needs of a family of five to six members, the model emphasizes scientific crop planning, efficient space utilization, and supports dietary diversity and household nutrition security through access to fresh vegetables.
These initiatives demonstrate practical applications of circular economy principles by converting organic waste into valuable soil amendments, promoting resource conservation, nutrient recycling, and responsible resource management. The efforts align with Special Campaign 6.0 objectives by extending cleanliness concepts to include scientific management and productive reuse of resources, highlighting the role of scientific institutions in implementing environmental sustainability principles at the campus level.
