Market Overview

Asian equities displayed mixed performance on Wednesday. South Korea’s KOSPI rose 1.5%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.14%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.2%, and China’s CSI 300 edged up 0.1%. The broader Asian market indices showed similar divergence: Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.2%, Singapore’s Straits Times Index dropped 0.6%, and India’s Nifty 50 declined 0.5%.

U.S. Futures and Index Moves

In U.S. pre‑market activity, Nasdaq 100 Futures climbed 0.2% while S&P 500 Futures traded largely flat. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.3%. Individual U.S. stocks moved sharply: Intel (INTC) jumped 9.05%, Oracle (ORCL) rose 2.36%, Adobe (ADBE) fell 3.47%, Qualcomm (QCOM) gained 3.17%, and Baidu (BIDU) slipped 6.96%.

Semiconductor Rally

Semiconductor shares led the upside across the region. Intel and Qualcomm surged after announcing a partnership with Amazon to develop custom AI chips, reinforcing expectations of sustained AI‑infrastructure spending. In South Korea, SK Hynix rose 3.6%, Samsung Electronics gained 0.8%, Kioxia added 0.6%, and TDK advanced 1.86%. Sony fell 0.74% and Foxconn was flat. The sector’s strength contrasted with weakness in U.S. software shares, where concerns that OpenAI’s GPT‑6 Astra could disrupt traditional software businesses weighed on valuations.

Oil and Geopolitical Tensions

Crude oil prices continued their rally, with Brent approaching $100 a barrel – up more than 60% year‑to‑date, the highest level since July. The price surge was driven by intensified Middle‑East conflict: Iran‑backed Houthi attacks on Saudi cities, U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers, and Tehran’s warnings to tanker crews near Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports to abandon vessels, raising fears of further attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure.

Inflation Data

China’s August consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.8% year‑on‑year and 0.4% month‑on‑month, while the producer price index (PPI) jumped 3.8% YoY, propelled by higher energy and metal prices. Core CPI increased only 1%, indicating still‑weak domestic demand. Export volumes surged 25% in August and imports rose 28.2%, with high‑tech exports up 42.9% in the first eight months of the year, underscoring the economy’s growing reliance on external demand and AI‑related products.

Economic Growth

South Korea’s economy expanded 0.6% quarter‑on‑quarter in the second quarter, beating the 0.2% forecast, supported by strong semiconductor export performance. Japan’s GDP grew at an annualised 1.4% in the latest quarter, below expectations, while real wages rose 2.4% in July, bolstering expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike in the coming week.

U.S. Monetary Outlook

Markets currently price about a 60% probability of a 25‑basis‑point Federal Reserve rate increase at its September 15‑16 meeting, reflecting anticipation of the upcoming U.S. CPI release.

Upcoming Earnings

Investors will watch earnings from Oracle and Adobe on Thursday for further clues on AI infrastructure spending and whether the technology is beginning to disrupt traditional software businesses.
