The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the successful intervention of the District De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) in supporting a 26-year-old Scheduled Tribe beneficiary from Karbi Anglong district, Assam. The beneficiary, identified as Simhon, received support starting May 19, 2026, from the Integrated Society for Development, which operates as a Grant-in-Aid DDAC center in the district.
Simhon, educated up to intermediate level with aspirations to join the police service, had been affected by negative peer influence and depression that led to substance use, disrupting his education and career progress. Despite coming from a stable financial family background, his addiction created emotional and personal difficulties that affected his overall development and left him unemployed.
The DDAC provided structured support including medication, meditation, counseling, yoga sessions, and proper guidance. These interventions helped address his substance use, improve mental well-being, and regain confidence. Regular follow-up services and continued motivation strengthened his commitment to recovery. Alongside treatment, he received vocational guidance to understand available livelihood opportunities, emphasizing goal-setting, financial independence, and self-reliance.
While no change in income has been reported yet, Simhon has shown encouraging progress and is now preparing for employment opportunities with a clearer sense of direction and understanding of steps needed to pursue his career aspirations. The case demonstrates how timely de-addiction services, counseling, and vocational guidance can help young people overcome substance dependence and move toward recovery and self-reliance.
