The Ministry of Ayush has announced 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' as the theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga to be observed on June 21, 2026. This theme reflects the growing global recognition of yoga as a holistic approach to promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being, particularly focusing on enhancing both lifespan and 'healthspan' - the period of life spent in good health.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, emphasized that the theme holds immense relevance as life expectancy continues to rise, noting that yoga teaches the art of aging gracefully and healthily as exemplified in India's ancient civilization where sages and yogis sustained longevity through yoga and spiritual discipline.

Scientific recognition of yoga's role in healthy ageing has grown substantially, with PubMed Central data showing research publications on 'Yoga for Healthy Aging' increasing dramatically from 183 papers in 2014 to 1,207 publications by 2025. The research output crossed 500 publications in 2020 and has continued steady growth, reflecting expanding scientific interest in addressing age-related physical and mental challenges through yoga.

The theme coincides with the rapid growth of India's senior-focused economy, estimated at nearly ₹73,000 crore, encompassing healthcare, wellness services, rehabilitation, assisted living, digital health, and elder care. This silver economy is expected to witness significant expansion in coming years, with individuals aged 45-64 representing a major consumer segment worldwide driving demand for preventive health solutions and wellness-oriented lifestyles.

The Ministry of Ayush has implemented several initiatives including evidence-based '10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases and Target Groups' with a dedicated protocol for the geriatric population focusing on enhancing flexibility, balance, mobility, respiratory function, and emotional well-being. The 'Yoga 365' initiative encourages daily adoption of yoga beyond the annual observance through technology-enabled platforms and home-based practice modules. The 'Yoga Samavesh' initiative aims to reach vulnerable and underserved sections through inclusive programs like chair yoga, low-impact routines, and community-based wellness sessions for senior citizens.

The theme also complements wider government efforts such as the Seniorcare Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE) initiative that encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, and start-up participation in elderly care solutions. The growing emphasis on geriatric wellness is expected to create demand for trained professionals in holistic and non-clinical aspects of healthy ageing, including wellness professionals, caregivers, digital health providers, and community organizations.
