The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under Digital India Corporation, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in collaboration with the Government of Manipur's Department of Information Technology, organized the BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop in Imphal on October 14, 2026. The workshop focused on advancing multilingual artificial intelligence and strengthening language technology integration into government and citizen-facing digital services.
A key outcome was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between DIBD and the Government of Manipur, represented by CEO Amitabh Nag and IT Secretary Somorjit Salam (IAS). The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in language technology, improve language resources, and explore solutions for multilingual digital services across Manipur. The partnership will identify priority use cases, assess language-data requirements, and integrate BHASHINI's language technologies into relevant government platforms.
The workshop featured a live demonstration of real-time English-to-Manipuri translation and highlighted Manipur's linguistic diversity including Manipuri, Tangkhul, Thadou, Paite, Hmar, and Liangmai languages. Discussions explored applications of multilingual AI in governance, education, healthcare, legal services, and grievance redressal. The BHASHINI शिल्पी platform was presented as an interactive platform for developers, students, and innovators to build with Language AI.
BHASHINI's current capabilities include supporting 36 Indian languages for text, 23 Indian languages for voice, and 35 international languages. The platform powers more than 800 government websites, has enabled over 9 billion cumulative AI inferences, and processes more than 24 million AI inferences daily. The collaboration will work with language experts and local communities to develop and validate solutions that reflect the state's linguistic diversity and public service needs.
