Third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Concludes in Goa
The Third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Knowledge, Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Rights and the Second BIMSTEC Nodal Group Meeting concluded on September 17, 2026, in Goa with participation from all seven BIMSTEC Member States. The conference featured a visit to AIIA Goa's state-of-the-art facilities in tertiary care and academics, where delegates shared institutional best practices. A plantation programme was organized symbolizing shared commitment to traditional medicine and biodiversity conservation.
The Nodal Group deliberated and arrived at four key areas of cooperation covering institutional and policy cooperation; standards and trade; documentation and capacity building; and implementation mechanisms. All Member States unanimously agreed to support each other in the areas of intellectual property, genetic resources and traditional medicine knowledge, providing a strong foundation for continued regional cooperation.
Prof. Vaidya P.K. Prajapati, Director of AIIA, stated that the conference was significant as it moved beyond discussions to consensus on several important issues, with the 'Goa Conclusions' providing a strong foundation for future BIMSTEC cooperation. Smt. Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, appreciated the active participation and constructive cooperation of all Member States. Mr. Kadirkamu Kandasamy Yoganaadan, Director of Science, Technology & Innovation and Health and Human Resource Development Division at BIMSTEC Secretariat, noted that regional cooperation ultimately seeks to improve people's well-being and preserve traditional medicine heritage for future generations.
