Bitcoin Price and Market Context
Bitcoin was quoted at $63,526 at 17:00 ET (21:00 GMT), representing a 1.38% increase over the previous 24‑hour period. The price held above the $63,000 threshold as the market digested a series of security‑related losses linked to Coldcard hardware wallets and continued Bitcoin transactions by Trump Media & Technology Group.
Coldcard Wallet Vulnerability and Theft Waves
A vulnerability traced to a March 2021 firmware release in Coldcard wallets used a predictable software randomiser for seed generation instead of the device’s hardware entropy source. This flaw allowed attackers to reproduce possible private keys offline. Three distinct attack waves were identified:
- The first wave on 30 July extracted 1,083 BTC from 1,196 wallets within 41 minutes.
- A second wave removed approximately 208 BTC from 1,912 addresses between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
- Across all three waves, a total of 1,367 BTC—valued at nearly $89 million—was taken from 4,585 addresses.
Trump Media & Technology Group Bitcoin Activity
Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain reported that Trump Media transferred 2,628 BTC, worth about $165 million, to Crypto.com on Sunday. A Trump Media spokesperson clarified that the BTC was transferred, not sold. Overall, the company has sold 7,281 BTC after initially purchasing 11,542 BTC for roughly $1.37 billion, implying an average acquisition cost of $118,522 per coin. The remaining 4,260.73 BTC is pledged as collateral against convertible notes, with a maturity no later than May 2028. Lookonchain estimates the combined realised and unrealised Bitcoin losses for Trump Media at approximately $555 million.
Strategy Inc (MicroStrategy) Dividend and Stock Movement
Strategy Inc, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, maintained the dividend on its STRC preferred stock at 12% for August. The company had previously raised the payout when STRC traded substantially below its $100 par value. Following the July dividend increase and a modest stabilisation in Bitcoin, STRC shares recovered to around $89.46, up from a June low near $71.
Institutional Demand and ETF Flows
Beyond corporate treasuries, Bitcoin ownership is increasingly shifting toward exchange‑traded funds, financial institutions, and governments. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded inflows exceeding $220 million after a period of sustained withdrawals, suggesting a potential longer‑term source of demand despite ongoing wallet‑security concerns and corporate sales that could temper near‑term momentum.
