Overview

On 19 June 2026, the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia announced a ten‑year partnership that will allocate more than $5 billion to infrastructure projects across British Columbia, targeting housing, health‑care and public‑transit improvements.

Funding Details

The newly created Build Communities Strong Fund will see the federal government contribute nearly $1.6 billion over ten years, which the province will match, bringing total possible funding for the housing stream to up to $3.2 billion. The programme aims to reduce development charges for multi‑unit housing by as much as 50 % in designated priority communities.

For health‑care infrastructure, the federal government will provide more than $600 million over a three‑year horizon, also matched by British Columbia, resulting in a combined commitment of up to $1.2 billion to modernise hospitals and emergency‑room facilities.

An additional $50 million will be allocated over five years to community‑infrastructure projects in coastal locations, with Terrace and Prince Rupert identified as priority sites.

The federal cabinet introduced legislation authorising a one‑time transfer of $284 million to British Columbia to alleviate construction‑related barriers.

Under the Canada‑British Columbia Partnership on Condo Conversion, innovative financing through Build Canada Homes and BC Housing will be used to convert more than 2,200 vacant condominium units in priority growth areas into affordable housing.

The Canada Public Transit Fund will invest $2.5 billion over ten years in new transit initiatives, including the Surrey‑Langley SkyTrain extension and broader service‑access enhancements in high‑traffic corridors. This adds to the previously announced $852 million for TransLink and BC Transit.

Both levels of government will each contribute $100 million toward new infrastructure in Tumbler Ridge, covering a secondary‑school construction and health‑centre renovations slated to begin in the summer.

British Columbia will receive $326 million from the Build Communities Strong Fund’s Community stream in the 2026‑27 fiscal year, contributing to an overall allocation of $1 billion for core infrastructure projects through the 2028‑29 period.

Economic Impact

The suite of projects is projected to sustain an average of 42,000 jobs per year and to add approximately $95 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product over the next decade.
