Overview
The press release, issued by Cars24 on 26 October 2026, presents market‑share data for used‑car sales on one of India’s largest organised resale platforms, covering internal vehicle transactions up to July 2026. Five manufacturers—Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra—collectively account for 75.5 % of all used‑car transactions recorded.
Brand‑level Shares
- Maruti Suzuki holds the largest share at 33.2 % of total used‑car sales. Its three most‑popular models are the Swift (14.5 % of Maruti sales), Wagon R 1.0 (10.2 %) and Swift Dzire (8.1 %), together representing 32.8 % of Maruti’s used‑car volume. The Swift is also the single best‑selling used car across all brands, accounting for 4.8 % of total sales.
- Hyundai ranks second with 21.6 % of the market. The i10 contributes 15.4 % of Hyundai’s used‑car sales, the Grand i10 adds 12.5 %, and the Creta—Hyundai’s only SUV in the top three—accounts for 9.7 % of its sales.
- Honda captures 8.2 % of the market, heavily concentrated in three models: the City (41.1 % of Honda sales), the Amaze (22.1 %) and the Jazz (9.6 %). The City alone represents 3.4 % of all used‑car transactions and is the best‑selling used sedan.
- Tata Motors holds 7.8 % of the market. Its top three models are the Tiago (23.1 %), the Nexon (20.7 %) and the Altroz (9.1 %), together making up 43.8 % of Tata’s used‑car sales. The Nexon, launched in 2017, already accounts for more than a fifth of Tata’s used‑car volume.
- Mahindra & Mahindra is the smallest of the five, with 4.7 % share. Its used‑car portfolio is dominated by SUVs: the XUV500 (29.4 % of Mahindra sales), the XUV300 (10.8 %) and the Scorpio (10.4 %). Although the XUV500 was discontinued in 2021 in favour of the XUV700, it remains popular, and diesel engines dominate the fuel mix for Mahindra’s used SUVs.
Fuel and Transmission Trends
- Petrol‑powered cars from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai together constitute 54.8 % of all used‑car sales, making petrol the leading fuel type across the two largest brands.
- Manual transmission remains the default choice; for example, more than 92 % of buyers of the Hyundai i10 opt for a manual gearbox.
Model Concentration Insights
- The concentration of sales within a few models varies markedly: Honda places 72.8 % of its used‑car volume in three models, whereas Maruti Suzuki’s top three account for only 32.8 %, indicating a broader model mix.
- Hatchbacks dominate the top‑selling lists, while sedans appear only for Honda (City) and SUVs for Mahindra.
Additional Observations
- Buyers appear to prioritize brands with proven resale value, extensive service networks and readily available spare parts, as reflected by the strong reliance on a limited set of trusted models across all five manufacturers.
- The data underscores that manual cars and petrol‑fuelled vehicles continue to dominate the used‑car segment, despite the growing presence of SUVs in certain brand portfolios.
