AI Governance Shared Between China and the United States
Chinese state media, referencing a social‑media account (Yuyuantantian) affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, asserted that the United States shares both the ability and responsibility to manage the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The commentary was issued days after President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump met in Washington, where their discussions covered AI, trade, and broader economic issues.
Xi Jinping was quoted as saying that the world’s two largest economies should cooperate to keep AI under human control and steer the technology toward public benefit. The statement highlighted that developing AI involves advancing underlying technology and sharing its benefits, while managing it requires addressing risks such as potential misuse and the possibility of humans losing control over AI systems.
The state‑media remarks called for the implementation of agreements reached between Washington and Beijing. Those agreements include the leaders’ endorsement of trade and investment consultation mechanisms and a reciprocal tariff‑reduction arrangement valued at $30 billion. Additionally, both sides agreed to extend the outcomes of previous trade negotiations conducted in Kuala Lumpur.
Government departments at all levels were urged to act to implement the consensus reached between China and the United States. The emphasis on AI follows the Washington summit, where AI formed part of a broader agenda that also covered trade and investment. The commentary frames AI development as encompassing both technological advancement and risk management, arguing that China and the United States have a shared role in addressing these areas.
