Overview
ClarityX’s Banking Access Report 2026, released on 13 October 2026, analyses India’s physical banking network using RBI data combined with geospatial and contextual analytics. The report finds that the country possesses more than 168,000 bank branches, yet the distribution is highly uneven.
Concentration of Branches
Nearly 47 % of all branches are located in just six states – Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal – forming a contiguous belt where both population and geographic coverage remain relatively weak. Additionally, 50 % of the branches are concentrated in only 140 districts, indicating a pronounced clustering effect.
Density Metrics
The average density stands at approximately 12 branches per lakh of population and 0.0516 branches per square kilometre. Between 2022 and 2026 the national branch network expanded by more than 15 %.
State‑Level Insights – Maharashtra
Maharashtra appears well‑banked in aggregate, but a deeper dive shows that 21 of its 36 districts fall below the thresholds set for population‑based and geographic coverage, highlighting intra‑state disparities.
District‑Level Spotlight – Nagpur
In Nagpur, the branch network grew 21.4 % since 2022, outpacing the national growth rate of 15.4 %. Private‑sector banks were responsible for 67 % of the new branches added in the district, and their networks expanded by 54.8 %. More than 68 % of Nagpur’s district population resides in urban areas that occupy only 6 % of the district’s total land area.
Pincode‑Level Example
The report cites pincode 440016 as a high‑potential area where the urban‑suburban population exceeds 1.4 lakh and more than 900 manufacturing units coexist with commercial offices, retail outlets, branded dining and medical facilities.
Commentary
Noopur Jain, a founding team member of ClarityX, emphasizes that while digital channels have accelerated banking expansion, physical branches remain crucial for building trust, enhancing financial literacy and reaching customers less comfortable with digital‑first solutions. She notes that banks are adopting data‑backed frameworks to identify underserved geographies that present significant growth opportunities.
