Steel Cutting Ceremony for Second Next Generation Missile Vessel
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi held the steel cutting ceremony for the second ship of the Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) project for the Indian Navy on September 17, 2026. The ceremony was attended by RAdm Kapil Mehta, Assistant Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, who served as the Chief Guest, along with other senior officials from both the Indian Navy and CSL.
The contract for the construction of these NGMVs was originally concluded with CSL in March 2023. The vessels are designed to be equipped with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor systems, which are expected to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy, contributing to its goal of becoming a 'Future Ready and Combat Ready Force'. This shipbuilding project reinforces India's commitment to developing a strong and modern naval force capable of operating effectively in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region.
A key aspect of the project is its emphasis on indigenous development and manufacturing, with all major role-defining equipment being sourced domestically. This approach underscores the nation's technological prowess and aligns with the Government of India's strategic initiatives of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India), 'Make in India', and 'Make for the World'.
