On Tuesday, 4 August 2026, Embraer announced that Colombia has signed a contract to purchase two KC‑390 Millennium aircraft for its military fleet, part of modernization efforts under outgoing President Gustavo Petro. Embraer had been in discussions with Colombia since May. The acquisition follows a 2025 agreement between Colombia and Saab for Gripen fighter jets, which is expected to involve joint production in Brazil together with Embraer. Colombia becomes the first Latin American nation outside Brazil and the 13th country worldwide to select the KC‑390, which competes with Lockheed Martin’s C‑130 Hercules. President Petro had previously criticised bureaucratic obstacles after a C‑130 crash in March. The KC‑390 jets will include connectivity features to operate alongside the Gripen fighters. The contract also encompasses mission equipment, an integrated services and support package, and an offset program that satisfies Colombia’s regulatory requirements.
