CPWD 172nd Annual Day Celebrations and Strategic Initiatives
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) celebrated its 172nd Annual Day on 12 July 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, marking over 172 years of service to the nation. The event was attended by Shri Manohar Lal, Hon'ble Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, as Chief Guest, along with Secretary Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Director General Shri Satinder Pal Singh, and other senior officials including Shri Mohd. Kamal Ahmad and Shri Pradeep Kumar Jha.
During the inaugural session, the Minister released several important publications and digital initiatives including Technical Publications, Nirman Bharati (CPWD's annual in-house publication), and newly developed e-NIRMIT ERP Modules, demonstrating the department's commitment to digital transformation and efficient project management. Additional publications released included the book "India's Urban Transformation: Reflections from Policy and Practice" and the Ministry's coffee table book "India's Urban Momentum: Towards Making Our Cities Liveable".
The event featured presentation of Director General's Medals, Commendation Certificates, and Certificates of Merit to outstanding officers, officials, and project teams for exemplary performance. Awards were also presented for Best Completed Projects, and certificates were given to participants who completed capacity-building programs conducted with leading academic institutions.
Strategic Framework and Future Direction
Minister Manohar Lal introduced the SANKALP framework guiding CPWD's future operations, comprising Speed, Accessibility, Nekneeyat, Kartavyanishtha, Adoption of technology, Lokhit, and Pardarshita. He emphasized adopting eco-friendly and sustainable construction practices, promoting modern technologies, strengthening capacity building, and accelerating digital transformation in public infrastructure development. The Minister highlighted the need for efficient online transfer systems, continuous institutional reforms, and preparing for future infrastructure challenges.
Secretary Srinivas Katikithala emphasized CPWD's evolution into a modern, technology-driven organization and proposed establishing a National Council for Public Works to serve as a national platform for promoting excellence, innovation, knowledge sharing, and standardization in the public works sector. This council would facilitate collaboration among Central and State Government agencies, academic institutions, industry, and professional bodies.
Director General Satinder Pal Singh highlighted CPWD's achievements and reaffirmed commitment to capacity building through National CPWD Academy and collaborations with premier institutions. He stressed adoption of modern construction technologies including Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital project management tools, advanced construction materials, and automation to enhance productivity, quality, and sustainability.
Technical Session and Pre-Event Activities
A Technical Session was held on 11 July 2026 featuring a keynote address by Prof. K. V. L. Subramaniam from IIT Hyderabad on emerging technologies, innovation, and sustainability in construction. A Senior Officers' Conference chaired by the Director General discussed ongoing reforms, project delivery, capacity building, technology adoption, and future roadmap for the department.
The celebrations included screening of a documentary film showcasing CPWD's major achievements, iconic infrastructure projects, adoption of modern construction technologies, implementation of e-NIRMIT ERP Modules, and award-winning projects, reaffirming the department's commitment to engineering excellence and innovation.
