CSIR-CRRI Scientific Collaboration for Visakhapatnam Road Infrastructure
A high-level meeting convened by Member of Parliament M. Bharath at the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) office resulted in a significant collaboration between CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), VMRDA, and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) for scientific road improvement in Visakhapatnam. The meeting included senior delegations from CSIR-CRRI led by Director Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar, along with Municipal Commissioner Ketan Garg (IAS), Chief Engineer P. V. V. Satyanarayana Raju of GVMC, and Chief Engineer Vinay Kumar of VMRDA.
The collaboration supports GVMC's major program to upgrade gravel and WBM roads to BT/CC standards, covering approximately 228 km of roads across eight constituencies. The comprehensive infrastructure development includes 34 km of central medians, over 1,550 street lights, and improvement of key junctions. CSIR-CRRI will contribute its 75 years of road research expertise to strengthen planning, quality control, and long-term durability of these works.
Specific technical areas identified for CSIR-CRRI's scientific intervention include: road relaying through end-to-end paving, new road construction and reconditioning of existing roads, scientific study and remedies for road erosion, urban flooding and coastal erosion solutions, "right-to-walk" pedestrian facilities, comprehensive road and road-safety audits, rationalization of speed breakers, and implementation of a modern Road Asset Management System for the city's road network.
The partnership will be formalized through Memoranda of Agreement/Understanding (MoA/MoU) between CSIR-CRRI and GVMC, and separately between CSIR-CRRI and VMRDA. Director Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar and Chief Scientist Dr. Vinod Karar committed to prompt execution of these agreements, including nomination of nodal officers, joint site visits, and identification of priority stretches. As an immediate first step, the CSIR-CRRI team along with Executive Engineer Shanti Raju of GVMC has already conducted surveys of selected road stretches to assess current conditions, geometric design, safety aspects, road signs, junction improvements, pedestrian facilities, and road distress parameters.
MP M. Bharath emphasized the need for detailed planning and a time-bound action plan to achieve world-class infrastructure, particularly noting Visakhapatnam's requirements given its major port, industrial base, growing metropolitan region, and demanding coastline that necessitates durable, scientifically engineered roads.
