CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) organized a specialized one-day training program for engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), held at the NDMC Convention Centre. The program focused exclusively on implementing the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Standard Framework for paving and greening of urban roads across the National Capital Territory.
The inaugural ceremony featured traditional lamp lighting and addresses by CRRI Director Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar, Engineer-in-Chief Sh. Naveen Bansal, and Special Secretary-2 Sh. Ravi Jha. The addresses emphasized the critical role of scientific road design, environmental mitigation, and standard paving techniques in curbing road dust and improving Delhi's overall air quality.
The comprehensive technical training covered multiple modules led by CRRI domain experts including Dr. Sampath Kumar, Dr. K. Ravinder, Dr. E. Madhu, Dr. Mukti Advani, Dr. Minal Chandra, Dr. Chintaman Bari, and Dr. Nischal Gupta. The Framework Background & Principles module provided in-depth orientation on paving and greening guidelines in the NCR region, principles of urban space standards, and road network planning aligned with IRC guidelines to enhance environment and safety. The Carriageway Design & Data Formats session offered technical guidance on carriageway standards for various categories of urban roads along with standard data collection formats. The Transit & Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) module covered engineering benchmarks for public transport facility design and dedicated standards for pedestrian walkways and non-motorized transport. The Safety & Infrastructure Integration session detailed road signs and markings, as well as seamless integration of essential urban utilities including drainage, electric utilities, telecom networks, bus stops, and gas fuel stations.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion between CRRI scientists and participating PWD engineers to outline the operational roadmap and way forward for field-level implementation across Delhi's road network.
