DAHD Reviews Lumpy Skin Disease Situation in Delhi
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India, conducted a review of the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) situation in the National Capital Territory of Delhi on September 13, 2026, in coordination with Delhi Animal Husbandry authorities. The review focused on current disease status, vaccination coverage, surveillance measures, treatment protocols, and strengthening of preventive and disease-control measures.
Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Naveena B. Maheswarappa led the review and emphasized the need for sustained vaccination, active surveillance, and timely implementation of disease-control measures. The department stressed close coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), gaushalas, and other stakeholders, particularly for effective management and vaccination of stray cattle and strengthening of biosecurity measures.
Current Disease Status and Vaccination Progress
The LSD situation in Delhi is described as sporadic and presently under control, with low severity and good recovery rates among affected animals. Notably, no mortality has been reported among affected cattle. As of September 13, 2026, approximately 584 active cases are being reported, primarily among unvaccinated and vulnerable animals, including those with co-morbidities, weak nutritional status, or those under stress.
Vaccination efforts have been substantial, with more than 45,950 animals vaccinated against LSD in Delhi during 2026. Vaccination and other disease-control measures are continuing with emphasis on timely vaccination, surveillance, isolation of affected animals, vector control, disinfection, and biosecurity protocols.
Technical Guidance and Coordination Measures
DAHD provided technical guidance to Delhi authorities on vaccination, treatment, and animal management practices. The department advised strengthening coordination with MCD, gaushalas, and other stakeholders for effective management and vaccination of stray cattle, isolation of affected animals, vector control, disinfection/sanitization, and implementation of biosecurity measures including establishment of physical check-posts across neighboring states for movement control.
Wider awareness activities involving animal owners, local representatives, NGOs, schools, and other stakeholders were emphasized to promote vaccination and good animal-husbandry practices. The department continues to maintain close coordination with States/UTs, regularly reviews the situation, and provides necessary assistance for effective prevention, control, and containment of LSD across the country.
