Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, conducted a review visit to the Central Poultry Development Organisation (Western Region) in Goregaon, Mumbai on September 13, 2026. The visit included Dr. Muthukumarasamy B., Joint Secretary, DAHD, and other senior officials.
The Secretary comprehensively reviewed CPDO's operations including breeding, hatching, rearing, and training activities, with physical inspection of the hatchery, brooder houses, parent stock, feed plant, and training facilities. Implementation status of the National Livestock Mission (NLM) and other poultry development schemes was assessed. Key directives emphasized promoting low-input technology birds, conservation of indigenous poultry germplasm, strengthening biosecurity measures, and modernizing poultry infrastructure. Specific instructions were given to strengthen farmer-oriented training programs and ensure supply of quality chicks.
The Secretary interacted with poultry entrepreneurs trained at CPDO who shared their success stories, highlighting the contribution of CPDO's training programs toward entrepreneurship development in the poultry sector. Poultry management books in Hindi and Marathi were launched to promote technical knowledge access in regional languages. Successful trainee students were felicitated for their achievements.
As part of the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative, dignitaries planted saplings demonstrating environmental commitment. The program included visits to the Poultry Gallery and detailed discussions with CPWD officials regarding CPDO Mumbai's redevelopment. Final-year BVSc & AH students from Mumbai Veterinary College participated in discussions about opportunities and challenges in veterinary and poultry sectors.
The Secretary also visited the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS), Mumbai, which maintains national biosecurity by preventing animal disease ingress through import of live animals and animal products. The functioning of the station was reviewed, including ongoing and proposed development activities aimed at strengthening infrastructure and operational capabilities. The visit provided guidance for upgrading CPDO (Western Region) as a Centre of Excellence in poultry development, training, and technology dissemination.
