Overview

The press release issued on 8 September 2026 from New Delhi outlines the transformative impact of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) on India’s freight transportation landscape. By operationalising the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), the government has created a high‑capacity, faster and more reliable rail network that links major industrial, manufacturing and logistics hubs across the country.

Network Details

  • The combined length of the existing DFC network is approximately 2,843 km.
  • The 1,337‑km Eastern corridor starts at Sahnewal in Punjab, traverses Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, and terminates at Sonnagar in Bihar.
  • The 1,506‑km Western corridor originates at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, passes through Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, and ends at JNPT in Maharashtra.
  • The Union Budget for the current fiscal year announced a third Dedicated Freight Corridor that will connect Dankuni in West Bengal with Gujarat, routing through Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, thereby further expanding the dedicated rail freight network.

Operational Benefits

  • The DFCs facilitate the operation of double‑stack container trains, which markedly increase freight‑carrying capacity and improve the efficiency of long‑distance rail transport.
  • Freight train speeds are expected to rise, while the pressure on the existing mixed‑traffic railway network is reduced, creating additional capacity for passenger train operations and enhancing overall infrastructure utilisation.
  • The dedicated nature of the corridors is projected to boost logistics efficiency, streamline supply chains and support broader economic growth by providing a more competitive transportation system for moving goods.

Strategic Significance

The development of the EDFC and WDFC represents a critical component of India’s broader effort to modernise its freight transportation infrastructure. By delivering a dedicated, high‑capacity rail corridor, the DFCs aim to make freight movement more efficient, reliable and cost‑effective, thereby strengthening the country’s industrial and export capabilities.
