Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched BIO-NIVESH, a strategic platform designed to catalyze private investment into India's biotechnology innovation ecosystem. The initiative aims to strengthen engagement between biotechnology innovators and investors while facilitating the flow of private capital for scale-up and commercialization of promising innovations. Dr. Singh stated that innovation requires investment to be complete, while investment requires innovation to sustain itself, making this engagement essential for India's biotechnology-led growth.
The inaugural BIO-NIVESH event brought together 20 high-potential biotechnology and deep-tech startups selected based on innovation, development stage, market potential, scalability, and regulatory readiness. These startups engaged with approximately 50 curated investors through a two-way engagement mechanism that goes beyond conventional pitching formats, allowing innovators to understand investment perspectives while giving investors deeper insight into scientific, regulatory, and development pathways.
Dr. Singh proposed a 'Big Five in Five Years' approach for the biotechnology sector, suggesting focused resources to create large anchor companies that could help build an ecosystem supporting other startups. He emphasized that biotechnology could drive the next industrial revolution and India must not be a late entrant as it was during the IT revolution. The Minister referenced recent policy initiatives in space and nuclear sectors that generated significant investor interest as examples of how enabling policies can create investment appetite in previously limited sectors.
The Minister highlighted the Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund with an outlay of ₹1 lakh crore, under which BIRAC has been designated as a Second-Level Fund Manager for biotechnology and allied sectors. This framework is intended to provide long-term patient capital for technology developers, startups, and companies working in strategic biotechnology domains, particularly projects ready for technology translation, scale-up, and innovation-led manufacturing.
BIO-NIVESH is envisaged as a recurring platform with subsequent editions planned across different cities to broaden participation, connect regional biotechnology innovation ecosystems with investment networks, and build sustained engagement between innovators and investors. The ultimate success metric for the platform will be measured by partnerships created, investments mobilized, technologies scaled, and products brought to market rather than the number of pitches or meetings conducted.
