FADA July'26 Vehicle Retail Data Shows Historic Growth Across All Categories
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) released July 2026 vehicle retail data showing exceptional performance across all automotive segments. Total vehicle retails reached 25,91,138 units, representing a 25.89% year-on-year growth and only a slight -0.16% month-on-month decline from June's strong performance. This marks the first month in recorded history where all six vehicle categories achieved their best-ever July sales figures.
Segment-wise Performance Breakdown
Two-wheeler sales led the volume with 18,18,289 units, up 28.25% YoY, crossing the 18-lakh mark for the first time in July. Passenger vehicles reached 4,16,555 units with 19.13% growth, also setting a July record by exceeding 4 lakh units. Commercial vehicles grew 24.04% to 99,666 units, nearing the one-lakh milestone. Three-wheelers increased 16.16% to 1,33,778 units, tractors surged 28.10% to 1,17,349 units, and wheeled construction equipment showed the strongest growth at 46.07% to 5,501 units.
Alternative Fuel Revolution and EV Milestones
The report highlights a significant shift in fuel mix, particularly in passenger vehicles where alternative fuels (CNG at 24.67%, Hybrid at 8.02%, and EV at 7.90%) reached a combined 40.59% share, closing within 1.09 percentage points of petrol's 41.68% share. This gap has narrowed dramatically from 13.21 points just one year ago. Total EV retails across all categories reached an all-time high of 3,27,901 units with overall EV penetration at approximately 12.7%, up from 9.6% in July 2025. Two-wheeler EV share hit a record 11.24%, while three-wheeler EV penetration reached 65.08%, and CV EV share achieved a new high of 3.57%.
Rural-Urban Dynamics and Regional Performance
Rural markets outperformed urban areas across all six categories on a YoY basis, though sequential patterns varied. Rural two-wheelers declined 6.16% MoM while urban two-wheelers grew 5.04%, affected by erratic rains, flooding in western and central regions, and the inauspicious Aadi/Shravan period in southern markets. Rural commercial vehicles grew 29.37% YoY versus urban's 19.36%, confirming broadening goods-movement demand beyond metros. Rural tractors showed particularly strong momentum with 28.83% YoY growth and 13.62% MoM increase, reflecting catch-up Kharif sowing activity.
Inventory Concerns and Channel Management
Passenger vehicle inventory increased by one day over June-end levels to reach 33-35 days, significantly above FADA's recommended 21-day benchmark. With festive stocking beginning, half of PV dealers reported higher inventory levels, and approximately one quarter carried over 25% aged stock. FADA urged PV OEMs to align dispatches strictly with retail demand to prevent dealer capital from being trapped in aged inventory during the critical festive period.
Forward Outlook and Dealer Sentiment
For August 2026, 74.30% of dealers expect growth, 22.90% anticipate a flat market, and only 2.80% foresee de-growth—a sharp improvement from the 51.24% expecting growth heading into July. The optimism is driven by festive curtain-raiser events including Independence Day launches, Onam (16-26 August), and Raksha Bandhan (28 August), supported by monsoon-fed rural cashflows and a favorable base comparison as purchases were deferred last August ahead of GST rate-cut announcements.
Looking at the next three months (August-September-October 2026), dealer confidence reached the strongest level in the survey's recent history with 87.85% expecting growth, up from 66.17% last month. Only 8.88% expect a flat market and 3.27% anticipate de-growth. However, FADA cautioned that August and September will benefit from last year's low base due to GST 2.0 implementation deferrals, while October faces a high base from last year's GST-cut-fueled festive surge, with Dhanteras and Diwali shifting to November this year.
Risk Factors and Market Monitorables
Dealers identified festive demand underdelivering versus elevated expectations as the primary risk (cited by 29.90% in two-wheelers and 27.06% in PV), followed by currency and crude-linked volatility, and PV inventory pile-up (20.00%). Notably, 46.15% of CV dealers saw no major risks. The monsoon's August behavior remains the single biggest swing factor for rural demand, as Kharif sowing still trails last year by approximately 4.7% and forecasts indicate below-normal August rainfall.
FY'27 Year-to-Date Performance
For the first four months of FY'27 (April-July 2026), total vehicle retails reached 1,04,76,327 units, up 18.27% from 88,58,034 units in the same period last year. Two-wheelers grew 17.51% to 75,11,630 units, passenger vehicles increased 22.80% to 16,87,040 units, commercial vehicles rose 17.44% to 3,84,254 units, three-wheelers grew 12.69% to 4,84,095 units, and tractors surged 24.77% to 3,86,648 units. Only wheeled construction equipment showed decline at -11.04% to 22,660 units.
