Freddie Mac Mortgage Rate Update

Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey released on Thursday, 27 August 2026, indicates that the average rate for a 30‑year fixed‑rate mortgage was 6.66 percent, a marginal increase of 0.01 percentage point from the 6.65 percent recorded the previous week and up from 6.56 percent a year earlier. The 15‑year fixed‑rate mortgage averaged 5.98 percent, rising 0.03 percentage point from 5.95 percent last week and higher than the 5.69 percent level observed one year prior. Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s Chief Economist, commented that the economy remains resilient, citing steady consumer spending, rising household incomes, an increase in homes coming onto the market and slower price growth in many areas, which together are providing buyers with better options and contributing to a more balanced housing market.
