GeM Platform 10th Anniversary Achievements and Future Roadmap
The Government e Marketplace (GeM) celebrated its 10th foundation day at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal outlining strategic priorities for the next decade. The platform, launched on 9 August 2016 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has evolved into a unified public procurement system connecting government buyers and enterprises across India.
Platform Scale and Economic Impact
GeM has built a substantial ecosystem comprising more than 25 lakh sellers and over 1.37 lakh buyer organizations. The platform has facilitated cumulative procurement worth over ₹20 lakh crore through more than 3.78 crore orders. Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) represent a significant portion of this activity, with 12.28 lakh MSEs fulfilling orders worth more than ₹9 lakh crore, accounting for 45.6% of cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). The platform has particularly supported underrepresented groups, with more than 2.24 lakh women-led MSEs fulfilling over 50 lakh orders valued at more than ₹1 lakh crore, while 42,242 startups have secured orders worth more than ₹65,633 crore.
Technology and Transparency Enhancements
Digital processes have remained central to GeM's evolution, strengthening transparency and traceability throughout the procurement process. Integration with government digital systems has made procurement and related transactions more seamless. The platform's technological foundation has enabled efficient, inclusive, transparent, and competitive public procurement as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for technology-enabled governance.
New Initiatives Launched
During the anniversary celebrations, GeM launched a customised 'My Stamp' to commemorate the milestone, recognizing the platform's contribution to digital governance, Ease of Doing Business, promotion of Indian enterprises, and inclusive economic growth. Additionally, GeM introduced a dedicated nationwide five-digit short code "14550" for its Helpdesk services, providing a simple and recognizable communication identity that is virtually mapped to existing Helpdesk infrastructure to ensure service continuity.
Strategic Priorities for Next Decade
Minister Goyal outlined five key priorities for GeM's next phase: strengthening last-mile access through expanded registration, cataloguing, training, and grievance redressal across districts via GeM Suvidha Kendras; deeper implementation of Artificial Intelligence for price intelligence, price sanity, and marketplace integrity; integration of States, public enterprises, panchayats, and cooperatives into a seamless national procurement ecosystem; enhanced focus on credit and sustainability through scaling GeM Sahay and TReDS linkages while mainstreaming sustainable procurement; and university outreach to engage young innovators and new buyers onto the platform.
Recognition and Future Vision
The Foundation Day programme included recognition and felicitation of exemplary buyers from Central Ministries and Departments, State Government Departments, and sellers for their contribution to strengthening India's public procurement ecosystem. As GeM enters its second decade, the focus shifts from platform expansion to impact multiplication through deeper technology adoption, wider participation, greater Ease of Doing Business, stronger procurement intelligence, and faster processes. The platform aims to make government procurement more accessible and predictable for Indian enterprises while providing buyers with smarter, more efficient, and data-driven procurement experiences, ultimately positioning India's digital public procurement model as a global benchmark.
