The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the successful rehabilitation of Imran Khan (name changed), a 33-year-old self-employed AC mechanic from Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, who overcame substance addiction through institutional support. Khan's addiction began at age 12 with cigarettes and expanded to tobacco, gutkha, alcohol, smack, injectable drugs, and cannabis, severely affecting his health, family relationships, and financial stability.
On October 22, 2019, Khan received treatment at Punarjanm Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA) in Sonbarasa, Gorakhpur, operated by Basudev Tiwari Sewa Sansthan. The comprehensive program included medical treatment, detoxification support, psychological counseling, motivational therapy, structured rehabilitation, medicines, safe accommodation, nutritious food, emotional support, family counseling, regular monitoring, relapse-prevention guidance, and livelihood support.
After completing the three-month rehabilitation program, Khan overcame his substance dependence and restored family relationships. He now works independently as an AC mechanic and undertakes other mechanical jobs, earning approximately ₹30,000–₹40,000 per month, which allows him to contribute to household expenses and improve his family's financial position. The case illustrates the importance of accessible treatment, psychological support, structured rehabilitation, and family involvement in supporting recovery and social reintegration.
