The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting provided an update on India's private FM radio sector through a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The government conducted e-auctions for 730 FM channels across 234 new cities on July 9-10, 2025, using a transparent system that was widely publicized in print and electronic media. The auction resulted in 18 successful bidders, including 9 new entrants to the FM radio sector, bringing the total number of operational private FM radio channels to 386 nationwide.
Under the Private FM Radio policy, all broadcasters are mandated to ensure that at least 20% of their daily broadcast content is in the local language of the city and promotes local content, including programs focused on local culture, traditions, and folk music. The Phase-III policy also permits broadcasters to access Prasar Bharati towers and sites wherever available to facilitate faster rollout of services, particularly in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas and aspirational districts.
The government follows a multi-pronged approach that includes tracking the broadcast of public service announcements and government schemes while maintaining close coordination with broadcasters for timely dissemination of verified information during emergencies and key campaigns. Letters of Intent (LOI) and Grant of Permission Agreements (GOPA) are issued with clearly defined timelines for operationalization, especially prioritizing LWE and aspirational districts.
