The Government of India is actively promoting regenerative agriculture practices to build a more resilient and productive agricultural system. This approach focuses on restoring soil health, improving biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience through various targeted interventions and schemes.

Key Government Initiatives and Achievements

National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF): Launched in 2024, this mission provides output-based incentives of ₹4,000 per acre per year for two years (covering up to one acre per farmer) and supports the establishment of 10,000 Bio-input Resource Centres. As of 05 March 2026, the program has formed 18,786 clusters covering 8.80 lakh hectares and enrolled 18.19 lakh farmers. Additionally, 33,676 Community Resource Persons have been trained at Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Agricultural Universities.

Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): Launched in 2015, this organic farming scheme provides farmers with ₹31,500 per hectare over three years. As of 31 October 2025, a total area of 16.90 lakh hectares has been covered since inception.

Per Drop More Crop (PDMC): Implemented since 2015-16, this micro-irrigation scheme provides 55% financial assistance to small and marginal farmers and 45% to other farmers for installing drip and sprinkler systems. As of May 2026, the scheme has covered about 109 lakh hectares with ₹26,325 crore in central assistance released.

Rainfed Area Development Programme (RAD): This program promotes Integrated Farming Systems through cluster development, providing ₹30,000 per family for adopting IFS and ₹10,000 per cluster for training. Since inception, ₹2,251.98 crore has been provided as Central Assistance, covering 9.53 lakh hectares and benefiting 15.73 lakh farmers as of December 2025. In FY 2025-26, ₹343.86 crore was allocated to States/UTs, and 96,013 farmers received training.

Agroforestry Component: Restructured under PM-RKVY from 2023-24, this scheme provides 100% assistance to government agencies and 50% back-ended credit-linked assistance to private beneficiaries. During 2025-26 (as of 31 October 2025), ₹78.31 crore was sanctioned to 27 States/UTs, establishing 135 new nurseries and raising 176.59 lakh saplings in 614 existing nurseries, benefiting 25,693 farmers.

Soil Health Card Scheme: Launched in 2015, this scheme provides farmers with plot-wise soil test reports assessing 12 key parameters, issued every 2 years. As of 13 March 2026, 25.89 crore Soil Health Cards have been generated since inception. The program has conducted 7.17 lakh demonstrations through ATMA and KVKs, and trained 70,002 Krishi Sakhis to disseminate soil health advisories.

Agricultural Performance Context

India's agriculture and allied sectors recorded decadal growth of 4.45 percent during FY16-FY25, the highest in previous decades. Regenerative agriculture practices including natural farming, agroforestry, micro-irrigation, integrated farming systems, and scientific soil management are being adopted to sustain this momentum by addressing soil health degradation and climate resilience challenges.
