GRSE Launches Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shruti
Yard 3037 (Shruti), a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata on August 11, 2026. The launch ceremony was performed by Mrs. Manika Sadhu in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, along with senior dignitaries from the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence, and GRSE.
The construction of NGOPVs is being undertaken concurrently at two Indian shipyards: GRSE in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) in Goa. These vessels are indigenously designed and built, representing a significant milestone in the Indian Navy's pursuit of indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. The ships are named after India's rich heritage, with this particular vessel named 'Shruti' referring to the four Vedas. The ship's crest design depicts the constellation of Ursa Major and a red and white colored lighthouse.
Operationally, the NGOPVs will augment the existing Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NOPVs) for multi-domain maritime operations. Their missions will include maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, protection of offshore assets, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), and anti-piracy missions.
This launch aligns with the Government of India's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) and the 'Make in India' initiative, emphasizing domestic defense manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign imports for critical defense equipment.
