Interdisciplinary Knowledge Essential for Future Engineers
Professor Arindam Ghosh, Head of the Quantum Material and Devices Group at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and a faculty member of the institute, addressed a seminar titled “Circuits, Control, Communication and Computing” organized by Ramaiah Institute of Technology (RIT) in collaboration with Bradley University. The seminar, held in Bengaluru on 11 September 2026, brought together academicians, industry experts and students to discuss the increasing convergence of traditionally separate engineering domains and the need for multidisciplinary learning.
Prof. Ghosh emphasized that engineers must move beyond narrow specialisation and develop an understanding of multiple disciplines, noting that rapid technological advancement creates a demand for professionals who can link circuits, control, communication and computing to solve real‑world problems. He highlighted that technology can address challenges in rural development, healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection and transportation, and urged students to view technology as a tool for societal benefit rather than merely a means of employment.
Smt. Gnanapriya Chidambaranathan, Associate Vice‑President of Infosys and Chair of the IEEE Bangalore Section COM, spoke on the occasion, stressing the importance of multidisciplinary research aimed at societal challenges. She mentioned IEEE’s role in organising seminars, interviews and soft‑skills training programmes for students, describing these initiatives as highly beneficial.
RIT Director M. R. Kodandaram noted that evolving technology landscapes—particularly in renewable energy, semiconductors and other emerging sectors—will generate significant employment opportunities for engineers with diverse technical capabilities and a sustainability mindset. He warned that graduates will need to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills to remain relevant.
The seminar was attended by RIT’s Honorary Director M. R. Sampangi Ramaiah, Director M. R. Kodandaram, Prof. Ghosh, Smt. Chidambaranathan, Education Advisor Dr. Karisiddappa, Principal Dr. B. Satish Babu, along with faculty members, experts and students. The event reinforced the importance of an engineering education ecosystem that encourages cross‑disciplinary thinking, meaningful research and the application of technology toward sustainable and innovative societal solutions.
