Program Overview
IIT Gandharnagar confirmed that the next cohort of its Residential PG Diploma in AI‑ML & Agentic AI Engineering will be curated around the Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) role, which embeds AI specialists inside client organisations to deploy agentic systems into production. The programme, the first postgraduate AI diploma in India delivered entirely on an IIT campus rather than through an online or weekend format, runs for six months and is administered by the Competency Advancement Academy (CAA) at IIT Gandhinagar.
Admission Criteria
Admission is merit‑based, requiring candidates to sit for the All India National Proficiency Test (AINPT), a proprietary 120‑minute examination, followed by a panel interview. There is no requirement for JEE or GATE scores, and seats are limited.
Curriculum and Industry Collaboration
The curriculum comprises more than 600 hours of instruction delivered jointly by IIT Gandhinagar faculty and industry leaders from Google, Amazon, Walmart, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Deloitte and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Students are expected to complete between 15 and 20 deployed projects during the programme and will graduate with a PG Diploma from IIT Gandhinagar as well as Alumni status.
Market Context and Demand
According to industry hiring data cited in the release, global demand for Forward Deployed Engineers has grown sharply through 2026, with job postings up 729% year‑on‑year. Compensation at leading AI companies for these roles is reported to be reaching $400,000 or more. The new cohort is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
Executive Comment
"Our engagements with industry leaders clearly indicated to us that they are increasingly pivoting to the FDE role," said Prof. Sam Placid, CEO of the Competency Advancement Academy. "In keeping with our stated objective of aligning our curriculum with industry needs, we have tweaked our curriculum to address this requirement."
