The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune organized a beach clean-up and plastic collection drive at Nagaon Beach, Mumbai on 16 September 2026 to mark World Ozone Day 2026. The event was conducted as part of the Ministry of Earth Sciences' nationwide Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar (SSSS) 5.0 campaign running from 12 to 19 September 2026, which serves as a precursor to International Coastal Cleanup Day on 19 September 2026.

The initiative aimed to promote ocean conservation, reduce marine litter, advocate for responsible waste management, and safeguard coastal and marine ecosystems. Participants including IITM officials, local representatives, dignitaries, students, and community volunteers began with a collective SSSS 5.0 Pledge reaffirming their dedication to maintaining clean beaches and preventing ocean pollution.

The cleanup activity resulted in the collection of 200 kg of plastic waste through manual segregation of plastic waste, discarded packaging, and non-biodegradable debris. The collected waste was systematically sorted into categories and formally handed over to local municipal authorities and authorized waste management agencies for recycling and disposal. The local community's cooperation was acknowledged through the felicitation of Mrs. Harshada Mayekar, the Sarpanch of Nagon, Alibaug, Raigad.
