India Achieves Landmark 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Power Capacity

India has crossed a significant milestone in its clean energy transition by achieving 300.50 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026. This represents over 60% of the nation's target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030. The non-fossil fuel capacity now constitutes 54% of India's total electricity generation capacity of approximately 552 GW.

The capacity breakdown shows solar power leading with 164.59 GW, followed by wind power at 58.14 GW, hydro power (large and small) at 57.24 GW, bio-power at 11.75 GW, and nuclear power at 8.78 GW. The growth trajectory has been remarkable, with solar energy expanding from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to around 165 GW currently, while wind energy has grown from 21 GW in 2014 to over 58 GW.

During the 2025-26 period, India installed a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity, with solar power contributing 44.6 GW and wind power adding 6 GW. This capacity growth has translated into substantial generation increases, with renewable energy generation rising from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.

The expansion has been supported by strengthened domestic manufacturing capabilities, particularly through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme focused on high-efficiency solar modules. The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has surpassed 200 GW capacity, a significant increase from just 2.3 GW in 2014.

Beyond electricity generation, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is driving industrial decarbonization through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, positioning India to become a global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. This achievement underscores how clean energy transition has become central to India's industrial competitiveness, energy independence, and economic resilience.
