The Ministry of Power has approved the export of electricity to Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours per day (from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours) from September 13, 2026, through December 31, 2026. The approval permits export of up to 600 MW of power through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV D/c transmission line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV S/c line. The quantum of power to be exported from January 2027 onward will be reviewed in December 2026.
This approval comes in response to significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal caused by recent floods, which has reduced Nepal's domestic power generation capacity and created additional electricity requirements. The power export will help Nepal meet its power needs during this period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal. India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
