The ninth edition of the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime Exercise (IBSAMAR IX 2026) concluded on October 20, 2026, at Simon's Town, South Africa. The ten-day exercise involved professional interactions and maritime evolutions between the Indian, Brazilian, and South African Navies, comprising both harbour and sea phases. The activities were designed to enhance interoperability, strengthen operational cooperation, and foster greater mutual understanding among the three maritime forces.
Participating personnel engaged in professional exchanges, operational interactions, and joint training, gaining valuable insights into each other's procedures, capabilities, and methods of operating at sea. These interactions built familiarity and confidence among the navies, enabling enhanced synergy in maritime operations. The Commanding Officer of INS Tarkash emphasized that such exercises provide a platform for translating longstanding diplomatic relationships into meaningful naval cooperation, noting that the true strength lies in both joint evolutions at sea and the relationships forged among personnel through shared experiences.
The exercise exemplifies the enduring maritime relationship between the three nations, which are connected by the maritime domain and share a common interest in safe, secure, and stable seas. IBSAMAR provides an avenue for addressing common maritime challenges, exchanging best practices, and strengthening operational cohesion. The exercise reaffirmed the importance of jointmanship at sea, with interoperability developed through repeated interactions, common training, and shared understanding of maritime operations. The professional bonds formed during the exercise strengthen institutional linkages and lay the foundation for future cooperation, underscoring the shared commitment to a rules-based maritime order.
