Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the two-day BRICS agriculture ministers' conference in Indore, presenting India's agricultural achievements and commitment to global cooperation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The minister emphasized the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (world as one family) and India's tradition of 'Atithi Devo Bhava' (guest is god) in welcoming international delegates.
India's agricultural sector has registered an average annual growth of 4.5% over the last decade, with total foodgrain production reaching 376 million tonnes. Specific production figures include wheat at nearly 118 million tonnes, horticulture production exceeding 378 million tonnes, and fish production surpassing 19 million tonnes. The sector employs approximately 43% of India's workforce and represents a crucial pillar of the economy.
The minister highlighted that 87% of Indian farmers are small and marginal holders, making their empowerment central to food security and sustainable agricultural growth. Government initiatives supporting these farmers include the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana providing direct financial assistance, Kisan Credit Card scheme, and crop insurance programs for financial security during uncertainties.
On sustainability, Shri Chouhan emphasized natural farming and balanced fertilizer use through the nationwide 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' campaign launched from Madhya Pradesh, which provides scientific information and technical guidance to farmers at grassroots levels. Women's participation was highlighted as a foundation for agricultural transformation, with crores of women participating through Self-Help Groups and initiatives like 'Drone Didi' enabling technological access.
The growing role of youth in agriculture through innovation, startups, digital technology, and agri-entrepreneurship was noted as making the sector more modern and efficient. The minister appealed to BRICS nations for greater collaboration in empowering small farmers, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural development through exchange of experiences, technological cooperation, and policy dialogue.
