India-Indonesia Bilateral Agreements and Cooperation Framework
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo outlined significant enhancements to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia, established in 2018. The agreements span multiple sectors including defence, technology, healthcare, education, and cultural exchange.
In the defence and security domain, both countries agreed to enhance collaboration through defence exchanges, disaster management, and industrial cooperation. Specifically, the Indian and Indonesian Coast Guards will work together to enhance maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean. The nations also decided to deepen cooperation in the blue economy, port development, and maritime trade as two close maritime nations.
Regarding social welfare priorities, India shared its experience and solutions relating to the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Public Distribution System with Indonesia. In healthcare, a concluded agreement will facilitate greater access for Indonesian people to India's high-quality and affordable medicines, while India will contribute to capacity building for Indonesia's doctors and healthcare professionals. Agricultural cooperation includes the supply of wheat seeds developed in India to strengthen Indonesia's food security, along with sharing best practices in sustainable farming and agri-technology.
Technology cooperation features prominently with an agreement to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and Digital Public Infrastructure. The countries will deepen collaboration between their startup ecosystems. A significant educational initiative involves establishing an overseas campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore in Indonesia, which will benefit young people across the ASEAN region. Space sector cooperation will advance through joint research, technology sharing, and capacity building based on decades of existing partnership.
Supply chain resilience agreements cover critical minerals and steel, with companies from both countries embarking on new partnerships in stainless steel and rare earth magnets. Financial integration will be achieved through the upcoming integration of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia's payment system to enhance ease of doing business and travel.
Cultural cooperation includes a joint conservation project for the thousand-year-old Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, symbolizing shared cultural heritage. The countries will celebrate the centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's historic visit to Indonesia as the "Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy," recognizing the influence of Tagore's ideas on Indonesia's first Minister of Education, Ki Hajar Dewantara. Democratic cooperation will be strengthened through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Election Commissions of both countries.
On global issues, both countries expressed strong synergy in their outlooks on the Indo-Pacific, with India emphasizing special importance to ASEAN centrality. Regarding Palestine, India continues to support a Two-State Solution and the pursuit of lasting peace.
