India's Infrastructure Transformation: 12-Year Progress Report
India's infrastructure landscape has undergone a major transformation over the past 12 years, moving from connectivity to capacity building across transport, housing, water, and logistics sectors. Public capital expenditure has risen dramatically from approximately ₹2 lakh crore in FY 2014–15 to ₹12.2 lakh crore in FY 2026–27, supporting this nationwide advancement.
Railway Modernization
Indian Railways has achieved 99.6% electrification by July 2026, up from about 20% before 2014. The railway budget increased from ₹32,000 crore in 2014–15 to ₹2.78 lakh crore in FY2026–27. The network now operates 162 Vande Bharat trains, 2 Vande Bharat Sleeper Services, and 72 Amrit Bharat services. Kavach Version 4.0 safety system has been commissioned on 2,633 route km, while the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is being developed over 508 km with a design speed of 350 kmph. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, redevelopment has been completed for 261 out of 1,340 identified stations as of 18 July 2026. The first indigenously developed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trainset launched in July 2026 is a 10-coach train with capacity for 2,600 passengers running on the Jind–Sonipat section.
Road Network Expansion
India maintains the world's second-largest road network at 63.73 lakh km. National highways length increased by approximately 61% from 91,287 km in FY14 to 1,46,572 km in March 2026, with four-lane and above highways expanding from 18,371 km to 45,516 km. Under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, road length increased from 3.86 lakh km (2000–2014) to 4.11 lakh km (2014–2026), with PMGSY-IV launched in September 2024 to connect 25,000 unconnected habitations by 2029. The Bharatmala program has completed 22,590 km of roads as of 31 March 2026.
Major Infrastructure Projects
Significant engineering achievements include the Chenab Bridge (2025) - world's highest railway arch bridge at 359 m height; Anji Khad Bridge (2025) - India's first cable-stayed railway bridge; Pamban Bridge (2025) - India's first vertical-lift railway sea bridge at 2.07 km; Z-Morh/Sonamarg Tunnel (2025) - 12 km all-weather access tunnel; Sudarshan Setu (2024) - 2.32 km bridge in Gujarat; Atal Tunnel (2020) - 9.02 km world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet; and Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel (2017) - 9 km tunnel reducing Jammu-Srinagar travel time by 2 hours.
Aviation and Urban Mobility
Civil aviation connectivity expanded significantly with UDAN connecting 95 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes through 679 routes, benefiting over 1.68 crore passengers as of 15 July 2026. Operational airports increased from 74 in 2014 to 165 in July 2026, with 25 greenfield airports approved. Digi Yatra is active at 38 airports, enabling over 10 crore seamless journeys with 2.4 crore downloads. Modified UDAN was approved in March 2026 for FY 2026–27 to FY 2035–36 with an outlay of ₹28,840 crore, envisioning 100 new airports and 200 modern helipads. Metro network expanded from 248 km in 2014 to over 1,155 km in 2026, with cities having metro connectivity increasing from 5 to 26 and daily ridership crossing 1.15 crore passengers. Kolkata operationalized India's first underwater metro tunnel in 2024, while Kochi launched India's first Water Metro system in December 2021.
Maritime Development
Major ports' cargo handling capacity nearly doubled from 873 MMTPA in 2014 to 1,728 MMTPA in 2026, with vessel turnaround time improving from 94 hours to 48.8 hours in 2025-26. Major ports handled 915.17 MT of cargo during FY 2025-26, up from 581 MT in FY 2014-15. National waterways increased from 5 in 2014 to 111 in 2026, with 32 operational. India became the world's top ship-recycling nation in 2025 with 35.4% global share (up from 30.1% in 2024), recycling 2.99 million gross tons (60% increase from 1.86 million GT in 2024). Jawaharlal Nehru Port ranked 22nd in Container Port Performance Index 2025. The Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (BMIP) launched on 12 May 2026 is a USD 1.5 billion domestic insurance pool with USD 1.4 billion sovereign guarantee, covering various risks for Indian-flagged vessels. As of 29 July 2026, 1,608 policies have been issued under the Pool.
Logistics and Industrial Development
The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan integrated infrastructure planning across 58 Ministries using over 3,291 data layers. As of 11 August 2026, 396 infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹18.66 lakh crore have been evaluated through the Network Planning Group, with 256 sanctioned and 198 under implementation. Over 4,220 industrial parks are mapped on the India Industrial Land Bank, with 272 plug-and-play industrial parks operational and 20 industrial smart cities approved across 7 corridors. The BHAVYA scheme approved in March 2026 will develop 100 new plug-and-play industrial parks, while BHAVYA Rasayan Scheme approved on 24 July 2026 has an outlay of ₹3,030 crore for implementation from FY2026–27 to FY2030–31. Seven Pradhan Mantri MITRA Parks have been proposed to strengthen manufacturing.
Water and Housing Infrastructure
Under Jal Jeevan Mission, rural tap water coverage increased from 3.23 crore households in 2019 to approximately 15.91 crore as of 10 August 2026. JJM 2.0 was approved in March 2026 with extension to December 2028 and enhanced outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore. Under PMAY-Urban, 99.25 lakh houses have been completed as of 12 August 2026, with 96% allotted to women. Under PMAY-Grameen, 3.13 crore houses have been completed out of 3.91 crore sanctioned, with nearly 75% in women's name or joint ownership. The SWAMIH Fund delivered over 63,000 homes benefiting 2.52 lakh people by June 2026. Under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, projects worth ₹2.79 lakh crore have been sanctioned since 2015. Smart Cities Mission completed 7,790 projects worth ₹1,56,257 crore by March 2026.
