India-Japan Annual Summit Strengthens Strategic and Global Partnership
Prime Minister of Japan's first official visit to India marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations, focusing on mutual trust as a key strategic asset in the current global environment. Both leaders emphasized their shared priority of a free, prosperous, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, leveraging their positions as the region's largest democracies and market economies.
Technology and Defense Collaboration
A Joint Statement on Artificial Intelligence was released, with major Indian AI institutions signing agreements with Japanese partners to combine Japan's precision technology with India's software capabilities for global AI development. In defense, a landmark agreement was reached on the first India-Japan co-development project for a Naval Radio Antenna, opening a new chapter in defense technology partnership aimed at enhancing regional peace, maritime security, and rules-based order.
Economic and Investment Partnerships
The India-Japan Investment Partnership continues to strengthen, with over 100 new business agreements signed in the past year, expected to bring more than $10 billion in Japanese investment to India. A new agreement between financial services agencies will facilitate smoother capital and investment flows. The ambitious target is to achieve 10 trillion yen in Japanese investment in India over the next 10 years and double the number of Japanese companies operating in India, leveraging India's ongoing reforms to improve ease of doing business.
Strategic Economic Security and Energy Initiatives
A Joint Roadmap for economic security was established to strengthen supply chain resilience in strategic sectors including semiconductors, quantum technology, and advanced materials. In energy security, the India-Japan Bio-gas Initiative will support the establishment of 1,000 bio-gas and organic fertilizer plants in India, strengthening the Gobardhan initiative and enhancing sustainability, prosperity, and rural livelihoods. Additional collaborations were announced in battery storage, green hydrogen, and nuclear energy to contribute to a global clean energy future, alongside initiatives to enhance energy resilience against oil shocks.
Sectoral Expansion and People-to-People Ties
The Next Generation Mobility Partnership Framework was created to extend success from the automotive sector into ship-building, aviation, and logistics. Efforts to enhance talent mobility, skilling, and technical internship programs are underway, along with strengthening research, education, and startup collaboration. The upcoming 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations next year will be celebrated through enhanced cooperation in culture, tourism, and the creative economy.
