Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the World Bank Group's World Development Report 2026: The Promise of Artificial Intelligence at an event in New Delhi organized by IndiaAI Mission and MeitY in collaboration with the World Bank Group. The report examines opportunities and challenges that AI presents for developing economies and provides a framework for countries to harness AI for development through adoption, adaptation, and advancement.

The Minister highlighted specific AI implementation successes in India, including a Baramati initiative where sugarcane yields rose by 40% with 30% less water and fertilizer through voice-based AI on phones for farmers who never used computers. In healthcare, TB detection increased by 35% through AI applications. In Gujarat, AgriStack is being used by 5 lakh farmers, and AI for animal health through Sarlaben is benefiting 3 crore cattle and their farmers.

India has emerged as a significant ecosystem for AI development and deployment across healthcare, agriculture, education, governance, and financial services. Through the IndiaAI Mission, the government is building a comprehensive AI ecosystem across seven pillars: IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre for indigenous foundation models, IndiaAI Datasets Platform (AIKosh), IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, IndiaAI FutureSkills, IndiaAI Startup Financing, and Safe & Trusted AI. The mission seeks to strengthen India's capabilities across the AI value chain while ensuring inclusive, responsible development suited to India's scale, diversity, and multilingual context.

The event featured presentations on key report findings, emphasizing that countries should adopt and adapt AI tools to local contexts rather than building advanced systems from scratch, and make cost-conscious choices as enablers, users, and regulators of AI. The report notes that only one of the world's 25 low-income countries has published a national AI strategy, highlighting the preparedness gap.

A State AI Showcase featured practical implementations including Navachetana (AI-enabled early screening for children aged 0-6 years to detect developmental delays in Andhra Pradesh), MahaVISTAAR AI (connected platform for personalized agricultural advisories in Maharashtra), EdskGrid (GeoAI governance intelligence solution for education in Meghalaya), and Vyuhaa-Cerviai (cervical cancer screening solution that won the NCG Catch Grant).

Key speakers included Dr. Michael Kremer, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of World Bank Group, who highlighted India's AI-based monsoon forecasting that predicted the unusual 2025 monsoon and is now being followed by Ethiopia. Dr. Gaurav Nayyar, Director of World Development Report 2026, noted that India is approaching AI for development by adapting tools to local contexts with government as enabler, user, and regulator.
