India has emerged as the global leader in green hydrogen offtake commitments with Indian companies signing 23 agreements totaling 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026, representing approximately 11% of the National Green Hydrogen Mission's 5 MMTPA target by 2030. These commitments are expected to attract total investments of ₹90,000 crore (approximately USD 9.5 billion) and position India as the world's largest supplier of green hydrogen derivatives.

Export Dominance and Major Contracts

Over 70% of the total offtake volume is earmarked for exports, with Indian suppliers offering the world's most competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol in European and Japanese markets. Notable international contracts include ACME Group's agreement with IHI Japan for 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia and another agreement with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical for 1,00,000 MTPA of green methanol. Reliance Industries Limited signed one of the largest global green ammonia contracts valued at over USD 3 billion with Samsung C&T Corporation of South Korea, with deliveries beginning by 2028.

L&T and ITOCHU formed a Special Purpose Vehicle for supplying 3,00,000 TPA of green ammonia starting December 2029. AM Green secured multiple contracts including being selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction run by HINT.CO GmbH, securing a minimum purchase value of EUR 585 million over 10 years for supplying Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin ammonia to Germany. AM Green also signed firm offtake agreements with Uniper Germany for 2,50,000 MTPA and with Japan's JERA for 70,000 MTPA of green ammonia. Jouno Joules signed with Select Energy GmbH for 600 TPD (approximately 2,19,000 MTPA) of green ammonia.

Domestic Market Development

Substantial domestic demand has been established under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme, including agreements for production and supply of 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertilizer units across India. Additionally, projects have been awarded under SIGHT for production and supply of 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to refineries of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Numaligarh Refinery Limited.

Mission Objectives and Impact

The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved by the Cabinet with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore up to 2029-30, with expected outcomes including 125 GW renewable energy capacity addition, over ₹8 lakh crore in total investments, creation of over 6 lakh full-time jobs, and aversion of 50 MMT per annum of CO₂ emissions. Green ammonia is emerging as clean bunkering fuel for the global shipping sector and is being deployed for ammonia co-firing in thermal power plants to reduce carbon emissions, while green hydrogen derivatives are increasingly adopted in fertilizer production and refining sector for industrial decarbonisation.
