India and Nepal Launch Cross-Border Remittance Mechanism

India and Nepal officially launched a peer-to-peer (P2P) cross-border remittance mechanism on June 6, 2026, representing a major boost to digital financial connectivity and neighborhood cooperation. The system establishes a direct linkage between India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal's National Payments Interface (NPI), enabling citizens of both nations to make seamless, real-time, and secure instant money transfers directly through mobile banking applications and digital wallets.

The technical integration was executed through collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, and the Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL). This digital payment corridor delivers immediate benefits including enhanced traveler convenience by eliminating the friction of physical currency exchange and carrying large amounts of cash, economic boost for local Nepalese merchants who gain immediate access to Indian visitors, operational efficiency through optimized cash management and lowered overhead costs, and real-time direct transfers that eliminate reliance on slower traditional banking channels.

The UPI-NPI linkage represents a major advancement in financial inclusion and fosters stronger economic and digital ties between the two countries, aligning with regional goals for accessible, safe, and affordable cross-border payments. UPI is currently accepted in nine countries: Singapore, United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia, enabling Indian travelers to make seamless payments abroad through familiar platforms.
