India's Nuclear Power Capacity and Expansion Roadmap

India's current installed nuclear power capacity stands at 8,780 MW comprising 24 nuclear power plants, which contributed approximately 3.1% to the country's total electricity generation during 2025-26. The capacity is distributed across multiple locations: Maharashtra (Tarapur with 1,400 MW), Rajasthan (Rawatbhata with 1,780 MW), Tamilnadu (Kalpakkam with 440 MW and Kudankulam with 2,000 MW), Uttar Pradesh (Narora with 440 MW), Gujarat (Kakrapar with 1,860 MW), and Karnataka (Kaiga with 880 MW).

Projects Under Construction

Five nuclear power projects are currently under construction with a total capacity of 5,100 MW. The Rajasthan Atomic Power Project-8 (1 × 700 MW) has achieved 96.26% physical progress as of June 2026 and is in advanced stages of commissioning, expected to become operational in 2026. At Kudankulam, Tamilnadu, Units 3&4 (2 × 1000 MW) have reached 82.65% completion with expected commissioning in June 2027 and June 2028 respectively, while Units 5&6 (2 × 1000 MW) are 45.00% complete and targeted for June 2029 and March 2030 commissioning. The Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana Units 1&2 (2 × 700 MW) will require approximately 6 years for completion and commissioning from First Pour of Concrete, which will commence after completion of ground improvement works for the Nuclear Island. Kaiga Units 5&6 (2 × 700 MW) in Karnataka are expected to be commissioned in June 2031 and June 2032.

100 GW Nuclear Energy Mission

The Government has formulated a comprehensive roadmap to achieve 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047 as part of the Nuclear Energy Mission. The present capacity of 8.78 GW is expected to reach approximately 22 GW by 2031-32. An additional 32 GW of nuclear power capacity is envisaged to be set up under NPCIL beyond 2032, comprising indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Light Water Reactors (LWRs). The government has approved pre-project activities for 2 × 500 MW FBR 1 & 2, which will follow the same design as the PFBR of Kalpakkam. The remaining 45 GW capacity is expected to be developed by other Public Sector Enterprises (both Central and State), Private sector participants, and Joint Ventures through various business models, enabled by the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act 2025.

Safety and Regulatory Framework

Highest priority is accorded to safety across all aspects of nuclear power including siting, design, construction, commissioning, and operation. Nuclear power plants incorporate safety principles of redundancy, diversity, and fail-safe design features following an overlapping defence-in-depth approach in compliance with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) codes and guidelines. A robust multi-level regulatory mechanism ensures continuous safety monitoring and review by AERB. Fuel security is maintained by the Nuclear Fuel Complex, a constituent unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
